Following a sold-out theatre run, Cape Town Opera's production of Bizet's Carmen screens in Ster-Kinekor cinemas, giving audiences who missed the stage show a second chance to see it.
Director Steven Stead sets the production against the Spanish Civil War, with conductor Tim Murray leading the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra through the score. Mezzo-soprano Nonhlanhla Yende stars as Carmen, alongside Lukhanyo Moyake as Don José and Conroy Scott as Escamillo, with costumes by Maritha Visagie and set design by Greg King.
The opera follows a factory worker whose affair with a soldier draws him into a spiral of jealousy and crime, building to a tragic confrontation at a bullfight.
