Event information
The Cape Wind Ensemble performs a chamber programme spanning three centuries at St Martini Church on Long Street. The group was formed in January 2023 by conductor Faan Malan and Kim Malan to give semi-professional and advanced amateur musicians around Cape Town regular opportunities to perform quality wind and chamber repertoire.
The programme includes Antonín Dvořák's Serenade for Winds, a work built around warm, lyrical writing for wind and brass instruments, alongside Joachim Raff's Sinfonietta No. 1 for Winds, a lesser-performed piece from the German Romantic composer's output. The concert closes with three movements from George Frideric Handel's Water Music Suite, originally composed for a royal river procession and now a staple of the wind repertoire.
The ensemble draws its members from Cape Town's community of amateur and semi-professional players, giving audiences access to well-known orchestral wind and chamber works in an intimate church setting rather than a large concert hall.
