Cape Town City Ballet brings back David Nixon's Dracula for a Halloween-weekend return season, following a sold-out run earlier in the year. The production is adapted from Bram Stoker's novel and follows Jonathan Harker's journey to Transylvania, where a business trip to assist Count Dracula with his move to England unravels into a confrontation with an ancient supernatural force.
Nixon, a Canadian choreographer and former artistic director of Northern Ballet, first created this Dracula in 1999 for BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio, and has since restaged it internationally. He served as interim Artistic Director of Cape Town City Ballet in 2023 and personally oversaw the set, stage and costume design for this production, giving him creative control over nearly every visual element on stage.
The production carries an age restriction of no under 13s, given its Gothic and sensual themes.
