The details
The Butterfly World Animal Sanctuary in Stellenbosch is an excellent opportunity for families to learn about various species of exotic animals. The centre has more than 700 incredible creatures for guests to see and interact with. Currently there are no butterflies on show until the travel ban is lifted, however, snakes, spiders, meerkats, birds and so much more is there to observe in the sanctuary.
Butterfly World is an ambassador for exotic animals and stresses that these animals should be appreciated but not kept. This is why all of the animals in the park have been donated by previous owners or confiscated by local authorities. The park has hundreds of small animals to see, from fish to amphibians. The park has tropical fish, frogs and reptiles like non-venomous snakes, skins, basilisks and bearded dragons. Families can interact with rare exotic species like lemurs, meerkats, marmosets, chinchillas and owls.
The Sanctuary features a Creepy Crawly Room with tarantulas, scorpions and other amazing insects. There are four broad aviaries, some of which guests can walk through and see birds up close. Photography is allowed. Birds, Koi fish and terrapins can also be seen in the Tropical Garden.
The park encourages interaction with many of the creatures and is a child-friendly space. Park entrance fees have remained unchanged since 2018 with children under three years entering free of charge. Butterfly World Animal Sanctuary is open every day of the week between 9am and 4:30pm.
