Event information
The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) program invites participants on a leisurely walk along the Coastal Dune Trail, starting at Eerste Steen in the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.
This initiative, established in 2003 through a partnership between SANBI and the Botanical Society of South Africa, engages the South African public in the important work of surveying, monitoring, and conserving plants.
Through the dedication of citizen scientists, the CREW program is able to survey and document the presence of plant species that require conservation. This helps identify and protect endemic plants.
During the walk, experts will showcase the diverse flora along the trail, explaining how these plants coexist, are pollinated, defend themselves, and thrive in the unique Cape Flats Dune Strandveld. The leaders will also point out specific plants that flower at different times of the year.
Participants should remember to bring water, wear appropriate hiking shoes, and use sun protection.
