Event information
Zanie Misbach, Cape Malay cuisine expert and creator of the Bo Kaap Cooking Tour, shares Cape Malay lifestyle and cooking skills in her cultural tours and hands-on cooking classes.
Guests can choose between a Bo Kaap Cooking Experience or a Bo Kaap Tour with lunch. All experiences include a walking tour of the Bo Kaap, one of Cape Town’s oldest urban residential areas. Bo Kaap is known for it’s bright and colourful flat-roofed houses, decorative museums, and its role in the era of Apartheid and colonialism.
The cooking experience also includes a Cape Malay cooking workshop, where guests learn how to mix masala and make famous dishes like rotis, samosas, dhaltjies and chicken curry from scratch. In the Bo Kaap tour with lunch, more time is spent exploring the streets and historic buildings. The tour then concludes with a three course Cape Malay meal in Zainie’s home.
While Zainie cooks, she shares humorous and poignant stories about her life and the town. Zainie stops by the spice shops in the town, the mosques to hear the call to prayer, and shows art installations telling the story of the eastern slaves who originally lived in Bo Kaap.
Bo Kaap Cooking tours was voted the best half-day experience in Cape Town.
