Birding at Steenkampsberg Plateau

Event information

Dullstroom is home to the endangered Blue Crane and Crowned Crane. This makes the Steenkampsberg Plateau between Dullstroom and Belfast one of the most popular birding routes in Mpumalanga. Consisting of unspoilt grassland, lush wetlands and striking rocky outcrops, it is most notably also a breeding spot and sanctuary for the critically endangered Wattled Crane.

The Plateau is home to over 150 different bird species, many of which are endemic to the region. The open grasslands house finches, bustards, bald ibis’, larks, finches, and francolin. Raptors in the area include jackal buzzards, fish eagles, long-crested eagles, snake eagles, jackal buzzards, and secretary birds.

In addition to birding, the Steenkampsberg Nature Reserve is a good travel destination offering eye-catching flora. There are short trails through the Steenkampsberg Nature Reserve which lead across the Suikerboskop mountain. These trails provide a few hours of easy walking.

Hikers are advised to take along sun protection and warm clothing as the weather here can change rapidly.
