Described by SA media as "The Uber of volunteering", Better SA is a community service organisation that offers a free Hop-on Hop-off bus service that transports volunteers to different volunteering opportunities around Johannesburg and Cape Town. All experiences are fully facilitated, making sure that volunteers use the time they have available to make the biggest impact.
Activities range from teaching computer skills, typing up hand-written CVs for the unemployed, playing educational games, visiting the elderly, walking dogs, environmental cleanups, and painting inspirational murals. Better SA has a volunteer opportunity to suit any personality or skillset.
When volunteers arrive at a Better SA bus hub, they are greeted by enthusiastic team leaders who will brief the group on the community or organization they are visiting. Guests receive a pack with step-by-step instructions on what to do and the supplies needed. Activities usually last up to 90 minutes. Those who want to participate should check the Better SA website to see which events or opportunities are posted. Buses usually leave on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
