Event information
Ballingskap | Elubhacweni is a physical theatre and drama production that explores the layered concept of exile through movement, text, and ensemble performance. Presented by AFDA Cape Town, the work is devised by a collective of students and alumni under the direction of Khanya Ngcuka and Kayla van der Merwe.
The production examines exile in its many forms, from displacement from one’s homeland to more internal experiences such as disconnection from identity, language, and self. Drawing on South Africa’s complex political history, it reflects on both forced and voluntary exile, and how these experiences continue to shape individuals and communities.
Structured around the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, the performance creates a sensory and symbolic landscape. Through physical expression and storytelling, Ballingskap | Elubhacweni invites audiences into an immersive exploration of belonging, loss, and the search for place.
