Event information
The Artscape Theatre Centre, located in Cape Town, South Africa, is a cultural treasure trove and a cornerstone of artistic expression in the country. Comprising multiple versatile venues, it offers a diverse and vibrant platform for the performing arts. The center's iconic venues include the Artscape Opera House, the Artscape Arena, and the Artscape Theatre.
The Artscape Opera House, with its majestic architecture and superb acoustics, is the jewel in the crown. It hosts a myriad of world-class opera, ballet, and classical music performances, attracting both local and international artists to its stage. Placido Domingo’s Operalia, the world’s foremost opera competition, chose Cape Town to celebrate its 30th anniversary, hosted by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town Opera and Artscape. This was the first time the competition was being held in Africa.
The Artscape Arena, in contrast, provides an intimate and experimental space. It incubates innovative and thought-provoking works, often spotlighting emerging artists and cutting-edge performances. The Artscape Arena may not have as many internationally famous performers as the larger venues like the Artscape Opera House but this has helped it become a force for experimental and emerging markets.
The Artscape Theatre, the core of the center, is a dynamic hub that accommodates a diverse range of performing arts. From theater and dance to music and visual arts, this venue is the epicenter of artistic fusion.
The theatre has a rich history of hosting a wide array of renowned performers from various artistic disciplines that include Miriam Makeba, Johnny Clegg, the late great High Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
