The Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre was the first organisation in the world to sustainably breed captive cheetahs. The centre offers informative guided tours where guests can enjoy a walk or drive through their cheetah and wild dog camps. Those wanting to see the cheetah in action can book one of their cheetah run tours, where guests can observe cheetahs running at full speed.
Since its inception 30 years ago, more than 1000 cheetah cubs and wild dog pups have been born at the centre. Many other endangered species are bred by the Cheetah Centre, including the Suni, African wild cat, Blue and Red Duiker, vultures, and the Riverine Rabbit. The centre is currently home to 78 cheetahs and 21 wild dogs, and houses animals that were previously illegally kept or confiscated in preparation for their release back into their natural habitat.
However, the NPO provides more than a home for their endangered animals, but a future. Their Wild Cheetah Management Programme has helped relocate cheetahs that were previously named “problem animals”. The project resulted in “Cheetah Friendly” farmer boards, where cheetahs and farmers peacefully coexist on 240,000 hectares of farmland.
