1860 Heritage Centre

Event information

This proudly South African museum reflects a multifaceted view of South Africa’s history. It documents aspects of the Indian community as part of the country’s collective national identity.

The centre’s permanent exhibition, curated by Selvan Naidoo, is titled ‘The Story of Indenture 1860 to1911’. It highlights the consequences of migration and the reshaping of history that comes with it. The exhibition celebrates the sacrifice our forefathers endured to find a better life in a foreign land.

Their MGL wing features ‘#MandelaGandhiLuthuli’: it’s a review of the contribution of Nobel Peace prize winners Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli. The history of these giants is showcased over two rooms.

A section dubbed ‘Curries: A Living Legacy of Sport, Identity and Politics’ hones in on the socio-cultural experiences of all the people that once used Curries Fountain. There are also passageway exhibits, and an artefacts room.

The origin of the 1860 Heritage Centre complex dates back to 1913 when architect Percy Eagle designed a school. The original building is an example of Herbert Baker influenced architecture.
