In honour of International Knit in Public Day, 67 Blankets and Exclusive Books are hosting friendly spaces where tight-knit communities can gather, learn from each other, and support those in need of warmth.
67 Blankets is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to donating blankets, scarves, squares, and knitting materials to those from underprivileged communities so that they can stay warm during the winter. In 2015, the group were awarded the Guinness World Record for the “The Largest Crochet Blanket in the World” to celebrate 21 years of democracy in South Africa.
With International Knit in Public Day on 13 June 2026, the NPO invites the public (whether experienced crafters or complete beginners) to come together at various Exclusive Books branches nationwide to crochet, socialise, and share.
The event is designed for families, with those of all ages invited to join in the movement. All participating stores and branches provide wool, crochet hooks, knitting needles, and refreshments to attendees. Newcomers, especially kids trying crochet for the first time, can ask for help from 67 Blankets’ ambassadors and KnitWits, who are experienced crafters ready to teach beginners the basics of crochet so that they can create their own pieces.
The initiative, titled Crocheting New Circles of Friendship, is meant to foster a space where individuals can connect and contribute to a cause larger than themselves. Attendees are encouraged to donate their crocheted blankets, scarves, and squares to 67 Blankets, so that they can redistribute them to those in need across the country.
In the Western Cape, Exclusive Books branches in the V&A Waterfront, Cavendish, and Constantia are opening their doors to crafters on 13 June, International Knit in Public Day. Later in the month, locations in Paarl (20 June) and Canal Walk (20 & 27 June) are also hosting communities looking to knit together.
Other retailers and community organisations are also involved in the campaign, with the George KnitWits gathering on 13 June at Outeniqua Lifestyle Centre (from 10am) and a community knit-in hosted by Ocean Basket Hermanus on 13 June (12pm – 4pm). Cape Town’s KnitWits group is also gathering on International Knit in Public Day, this time at the Blou Route Mall (10am – 2pm).
