A collaboration between chainsaw artist Noel McCully and artist Mandy Lake manifests in shells and surface at a new exhibition at Youngblood Africa.
This exhibition features impressive oversized wooden shells: Noel McCully's chainsaw artistry sculpts the wood into particular forms, which are then painted by Mandy Lake. McCully intricately reshapes the raw material to highlight the natural character and beauty of each wood piece, with great focus on texture and shape. Lake, through a combination of sanding and painting techniques creates finished products transforming wood into 'shell': each sculpture appears as shells worn by the elements over time.
Beyond these wooden shells, Mandy's paintings of oceanic surfaces are on show. In addition to the collaboration between these two artists, witness an impressive collaboration between light, colour, and mood, captured by both Mandy and Noel.
Visual art and nature's deep relationship is explored in this space, and offer a tactile exploration where the tops of a forest canopy meet the bottom of the ocean floor.
