Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Event information

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden was founded in 1982 but has been a popular venue for outings since the 1800s.

Voted the best place to get back to nature in Gauteng for nine years in a row. The natural vegetation of the area is known as the 'Rocky Highveld Grassland' and consists of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams. The variety of habitats accommodates over 600 naturally occurring plant species.

The botanical garden also houses an abundance of wildlife, including a breeding pair of Verreaux's Eagles that nest on the cliffs alongside the waterfall. There are over 220 birds species as well as a number of reptiles and small mammals, including small antelope and jackals.

Eagle's Fare Restaurant is located in the gardens and offers an à la carte menu, light lunches and tea, with a buffet lunch served on Sundays. Visitors can however picnic at their own leisure and enjoy the scenery.
