Experience an evening of musical excellence with the USSO and Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra.
Led by Liam Burden and Reghard Kühn, USSO showcases Dvorak and Hofmeyer, while the SYO opens the evening with a captivating prelude.
Liam Burden graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a BMus and a BMusHons cum laude. He specialized in saxophone performance under Darryl Walters. During his Honours year, Liam was afforded the opportunity to study abroad at the West Virginia University in the United States of America where he studied saxophone with Dr Michael Ibrahim and conducted with Dr Mitchell Arnold. In collaboration with the composition department, Liam successfully conducted the first KOMPOS concert which included works composed by the students for the event. In 2009 Liam collaborated with the University of Stellenbosch Drama Department, and Peter Krummeck, as the musical director for the play with music entitled Brothers.
Reghardt Kühn started his music career in high school, learning piano, euphonium, and trombone. He won the South African Marching Band Championships twice as part of the Empangeni Marching Band and formed part of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Youth Orchestra for three years as a euphonist and trombonist. In his undergraduate degree, he majored in composition under the tutelage of Prof. Hans Roosenschoon, and orchestral conducting in his postgraduate degree under the tutelage of Prof. Corvin Matei. In 2014 he was appointed as the resident conductor of the Stellenbosch University Medical Orchestra, a tertiary-level orchestra consisting of students, lecturers, and practising physicians, and is the first of its kind in South Africa.
