Event information
The Bioscope has proudly been Johannesburg’s independent cinema for the last 12 years. Once situated in the trendy Maboneng precinct, it has now moved to 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark and fits in with this precinct’s mix of carefully curated, bespoke stores and independent restaurants.
Started in 2010, the Bioscope has one cinema room that seats 47 people. The main aim of the theatre is to increase the diversity of content on South African theatre screens by adding local and internationally produced movies and documentaries that don’t make it into mainstream theatres.
The Bioscope works with international embassies to screen movies from all over the world. Over the last ten years it has created signature cinema events such as the DumplingBox Cinema, Ugly Cry Nights and Anniversary screenings. On occasion it hosts live stand-up comedy, music and improv comedy. The cinema is also available for hire with tailored packages designed to suit everyone’s needs.
The Bioscope Cafe serves patrons both in the cinema, and in the beautiful outdoor courtyard. They specialise in pizzas, toasted paninis and salads.
