Event information
Artist Richard Pullen’s pottery studio is hidden in a tiny village called Bathurst in the Eastern Cape. Richard leads regular workshops and demonstrations where he teaches his unique methods and techniques.
Pullen discovered clay at the young age of 15 and now creates a unique range of pottery in his personal style. From hand-etched designs and rich and earthy textures to the unpredictable Smoke Fired Vessels. Here, individual effects are created on each ceramic piece by leaving the clay porous and allowing it to absorb the smoke in the firing process, creating dramatic effects and fume swirls.
Richard’s studio was opened 21 years ago and his passion for the materials he uses is evident in his work. He makes most of his own clay from raw kaolin deposits he finds 55 kilometres away from his studio. Richard presents demonstrations throwing and altering pieces as well as workshops where he shares the secrets behind his smoke firing technique. Guests can visit his studio to view his collection or contact him to participate in one of his workshops and demonstrations.
