Red Boots is one of 11 productions that form part of TheatreArts’ exciting new off-the-grid season of shows, Theatre in the Dark. This season aims to cut through the debilitating experience that load-shedding has on South Africans, and instead create theatrical experiences that create opportunities for audiences to embrace the darkness and find the light within themselves.
Inspired by the book Gossie, written by Olivier Dunrea, Red Boots is a visual-dance exploration of the attachment children have to their Wellington boots and the joy that this seemingly ordinary object brings them. The performance incorporates sign language and dance to create a fantastical realm of adventure, friendship, loss, and what it means to share. Red Boots is a wonderful experience for preverbal toddlers between the 1-3-year-old age group and their carers.
The creative team of Red Boots, headed up by TheatreArts director, Caroline Calburn, are all theatremakers who specialize in the development of theatre for young audiences. Calburn has had an interest in the development of theatre for young audiences before and since having her children and began developing Red Boots alongside dancers Andile Vellem and Jori Snell over 10 years ago.
Combining the experience and efforts of this inclusive cast and the striking set design and use of object theatre created by theatremaker, Jayne Batzofin; Red Boots guarantees an escape into a magical realm.
