The Cape Town Opera presents an incredible double bill featuring two short operas in commemoration of the centenary of the death of Italian composer, Pucinni. Coming on the heels of their successful productions of 'The Sound of Music' and 'Puccini in the Park' at Maynardville, the performers prepare another magical night of musical storytelling.
This double bill is two and a half hours in total, with a thirty-minute interval separating both one-hour operas. The first opera is the dramatic 'Suor Angelica' which is complemented by the hilarity of the second opera, 'Gianni Schicchi'.
'Suor Angelica' tells the tale of Sister Angelica, a young nun who is sent to the convent by her noble family as punishment for having conceived a child out of wedlock.
In stark contrast, 'Gianni Schicchi' tells a story of great humour. After the wealthy Buoso Donati passes away, a familial feud erupts over his vast inheritance. They call for Gianni Schicchi’s aid, whose shrewdness is greatly underestimated by the family, leading to unexpected and comedic outcomes.
The production features talented solo artists such as Nobulumko Mngxekeza, Lukhanyo Moyake and Conroy Scott who are accompanied by the wonderful Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jeremy Silver.
