The Kedar Heritage Lodge, Conference Centre & Spa is built on Boekenhoutfontein, the historic farm that once belonged to President Paul Kruger. It encompasses an area of some 1 200 acres, and is populated with a variety of game. Its facilities include the Paul Kruger Country House Museum which showcases Kruger memorabilia.
There is much to see in many rooms, each which need time to explore. Kruger’s rifle is on display, as is his many bibles, a bellows organ that was played by his wife, as well as numerous gifts given to him by visiting state dignitaries. There are dozens of glass display cabinets filled with all the personal curiosities of a bygone era - uniforms and regimental regalia, old binoculars, water bottles and bullet cases.
These historical collections include authentic documents, campaign maps, medals, cigarette cards, Christmas chocolate tins from Queen Victoria for the soldiers, well-used tobacco tins, pocket bibles, shell cases, quaint Kruger money boxes, and English-themed china and glass.
In close proximity are family graves, a koppie where Kruger sought religious guidance, and a saddle in the hills where he hid his horses from British forces.
The property encompasses several unique historic buildings, all which offer insight into Kruger's life at a time when South Africa was locked in a struggle for sovereignty with the British Empire. Monuments to the fighting men of the Anglo Boer War created by South African artist Adam Madebe also pay tribute to South Africa’s history.
