Event information
The small Kowie Museum in Port Alfred is dedicated to the social history of the Albany District and early settlers of the 1820 and 1889 era. An old card index with the names of 4,000 British settlers and their immediate descendants who landed in the area in the 1800s is displayed.
Established in 1982, the museum preserves all records of the town's history and its people. Exhibits include naval and railway artefacts, photos and paintings of Port Alfred, and information on Xhosa customs and beadwork.
There’s and egg cup collection of Mary Dickin, a member of the Egg Cup Collectors Club of Great Britain. These date from the 19th century to the present, and include examples of important porcelain manufacturers.
The town is known for its large variety of shells along the shore, and a collection of sea shells from the Port Alfred area is also on display.
The treacherous east coast of South Africa and the Kowie River have played havoc with many ships and the museum features numerous photographs of ships and shipwrecks. It also has a collection of approximately 450 historical books.
