Event information
Izimbongi Zesimanje / Nowadays Poetry is a regular event that happens every Wednesday at the BAT Centre in Durban. The non-profit organization that produces it and bears the same name, was founded in 2001 by a group of poets.
The event attracts young street philosophers, writers, artists and aspiring and established poets and storytellers. It comprises of readings and live poetry sessions.
Initially the vision for Izimbongi Zesimanje / Nowadays Poetry was to promote reading and creative writing. This has evolved to promoting the use of poetry, creative writing, spoken word and related art forms within local and international communities.
Thematically there is a responsibility to tackle social ills, trying to find the role of the artist in society and how the arts can be used to challenge these social ills.
Poets from Izimbongi Zesimanje / Nowadays Poetry have consistently featured in the Kwa Zulu Natal Provincial Slam.
