Event information
Gags 'n Gays is a comedy show run by queers, for queers and their lovely ally peers. This fundraiser features a LGBTQI+ line-up headed by Shimmy Isaacs and Eugene Mathews.
100% of the proceeds go the LGBT+ community's greatest supporters, Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust and Triangle Project. In honour of South Africa's National Womxns' Month there is also a sanitary pad collection on the evening.
WHY GAGS 'N GAYS?
Because LGBT+ representation in the comedy and performing arts sector matters. June was Gay Pride Month, July is Gay Wrath Month and August is all about supporting intersectional feminism at its core.
WHY RAPE CRISIS/TRIANGLE PROJECT?
There has been a recent spike in violence directed towards transgendered or transexual people, both abroad and in the Cape. With neighbouring African countries forcing queer refugees to seek asylum here, Cape Town faces chronically insufficient homeless shelters, with LGBT+ homeless persons most at risk of abuse. Both Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust and Triangle Project have been at the centre of providing legal, physical and emotional assistance. Both will tell you that despite the recently passed Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, there's still a lot more to be done for survivors of homophobic hatred.
