Camagu (Be Honoured) Dizu Plaatjies

Event information

The UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra presents 'Camagu' to honour the career of Professor Dizu Plaatjies of the African Music department at the South African College of Music, as he ends his tenure at the University of Cape Town.

Professor Plaatjies is one of South Africa’s leading traditional artists and cultural historians. He is the founder of the music group Ibuyambo and former leader of the globally celebrated traditional group, Amampondo, who recorded and toured locally and internationally in the 1980s and 1990s.

Since the formation of his group Amampondo he has travelled worldwide, sharing his ideas on cultural exchange with great success. In 1997 after Amampondo’s international tour, Dizu returned to South Africa and began lecturing African dance and music at UCT. Dizu regards his work in communities, educational institutions and with many visiting scholars, as a challenge to the present and future government to respect and conserve the traditional heritage of the people; to see the world through the eyes of the people.

It is this extensive legacy built upon cultural exchange that the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra wish to honour over a two-night run at the Baxter Theatre. UCT students are offered free entry to the concerts, subject to availability.
