Event information
The annual Berg River Canoe Marathon invites passionate paddlers to participate in the longest canoe marathon in the country.
An incredible four-day challenge, the marathon covers 240km from Market Street Bridge in Paarl to Carinus Bridge in Velddrif and proceeds even under Cape Town's winter rains. All entrants are required to be a Grade paddler according to Canoeing South Africa (CSA) rules and regulations, must be registered with their unions, and must be in possession of a valid CSA license.
Each race day is one of four legs, with the cutoff on the first three days being at 6pm, and the final race day cutting off at 3.30pm. Day one goes from the starting line in Paarl and ends in Zonquasdrift, day two goes from Zonquasdrift to Bridgetown, day three goes from Bridgetown to Zoutkloof, with day four ending at the finish in Velddrift.
The top three finishers of each category receive prize money of upwards of R3 000 at the prize giving ceremony at the very end of the marathon. An entry ticket gets participants a goody bag, a t-shirt, lunch at the end of the first three days, a finishing medal, and a meal at the prize-giving function in Velddrif.
